What Is iptv-org?
iptv-org (hosted at github.com/iptv-org/iptv) is an open-source project that maintains a public database of free IPTV channel streams from around the world. It's not a subscription service — it's a community-maintained list of publicly available stream URLs that anyone can access for free.
The project was created by developers to catalogue free, publicly broadcast streams accessible without a subscription.
What iptv-org Provides
The iptv-org repository contains:
- Free channel streams from broadcasters worldwide
- M3U playlist files organised by country, language, and category
- Regular community updates as dead links are removed and new streams added
- Metadata for tens of thousands of channels
The Real Limitations of iptv-org
While impressive in scope, iptv-org has significant limitations for everyday viewing:
Reliability Is Inconsistent
Free public streams are inherently unstable. Broadcasters change stream URLs, apply geo-restrictions, or shut down streams without notice. A channel working today may return a black screen tomorrow with no explanation.
No Sports or Premium Content
iptv-org lists publicly broadcast streams only. Major sports events — Premier League, Champions League, NFL, NBA, UFC — premium entertainment channels, and pay-TV content are not available. Accessing these requires a paid subscription.
Zero Customer Support
As an open-source project, iptv-org has no customer support infrastructure. If streams don't work, you troubleshoot entirely on your own through GitHub issues and community forums.
No VOD Library
iptv-org provides live stream URLs only. There is no on-demand movie or series library of any kind.
iptv-org vs. a Premium IPTV Provider
iptv-org: Free, unreliable streams, no sports, no VOD, no support.
Premium IPTV: From €20/month, 99.9% uptime, 50,000+ channels, 100,000+ VOD titles, 24/7 support.

When iptv-org Makes Sense
iptv-org works well for accessing free public broadcasts — local news channels, government broadcasts, and internationally available content. It's a useful tool for exploring what's publicly available, not a replacement for a paid service.
When You Need a Paid Service
If you want sports, premium entertainment, reliable streams, or any on-demand content — a paid IPTV subscription is the only practical option. Understanding what makes IPTV providers reliable will help you choose wisely.
